Trademark Registration in Qatar
You register a trademark in Qatar with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, through its online e-services. The application names the owner, lists the goods or services the mark covers and includes a picture of the mark. Why register in Qatar
Once registered, the mark is yours alone to use in Qatar. You can also let other businesses use it, for a fee.
It comes up at company formation too. A trade name built on a registered trademark needs a franchise, usufruct or licence-to-use document to go with it.

Trademark registration process in Qatar
Say you file a café name and logo in March. With a complete file, the Ministry has until about June to decide. Only then is the mark published and the 60-day objection window opened, so the certificate comes later still.
| Stage | Period | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Day one | Filed online with the Ministry by the owner or a representative, for one class of goods or services or several |
| Examination | Up to 90 days | The Ministry accepts, refuses or asks for changes; a request for changes left unanswered for 90 days counts as withdrawal |
| Publication | After acceptance | The mark is published, at the applicant’s cost |
| Objections | 60 days from publication | Anyone may object in writing; the applicant gets a copy within 30 days and has 60 days to reply |
| Registration | When the objection period ends | With no objection the mark is registered, with effect from the filing date |
If the Ministry refuses the mark, or accepts it only with conditions, you have 60 days from notice to go to a committee. Its decision can then be taken to court, again within 60 days.

When does a Qatari trademark run out?
Ten years after the certificate date, unless you renew; each renewal buys another ten. Protection covers Qatar only. If the owner leaves the mark unused for five years in a row, a court can remove it.

What can be registered as a trade mark in Qatar?
Almost any sign that tells your goods or services apart from someone else’s can be a trade mark. The law’s own list runs from names, words, signatures, letters and numbers to drawings, packaging, shapes and colours, alone or combined; a sound or smell may qualify as well. A plain description of the product will not pass, nor will a misleading mark or a copy of one already filed.

How is intellectual property protected in Qatar?
Mostly through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Trademark and patent applications and copyright registrations all go in through its e-services. For trademarks the governing text is the GCC Trademark Law (Qatar’s Law No. 7 of 2014); the Ministry holds the register, and anyone with a real interest can read it and get a certified extract.

Who can apply to register a trademark in Qatar?
Both individuals and companies can apply. An individual gives their name, occupation, nationality and residence; a company gives its name, address and the purpose of the mark, with an extract of its commercial register. An agent can file for you if they hold your certified authorisation.
